The x402 protocol is moving fast enough that by the time press releases reach the news feeds, the state of the world has already shifted. This page is our attempt to keep a single reference that reflects what is actually true today, not what was announced three weeks ago. It is a companion to our full x402 reference piece, which explains what the protocol is and why it matters. This page is for the question that reference piece does not answer: who is actually building on it.

Cumulative transactions on Base. Growth surged in Q4 2025, driven largely by meme coin activity (notably PING), then moderated in early 2026. Chainalysis is direct that mass adoption remains distant and that current participants are mostly crypto-native.

30-day value transferred. Sellers grew 23 percent and buyers grew 37 percent over the same window.

Tester-to-payer conversion. The historical baseline worth keeping: in late Q1 2026 a single independent data marketplace reported 1,183 agent probes, 5 settlements, and $0.11 of revenue. The bounce diagnosis then was evaluation friction, not payment friction: agents declining to pay because they cannot judge whether a resource is worth the cost. The improving conversion rate is the number to watch against that diagnosis.

Real daily volume (independent onchain analysis). Artemis classified roughly half of observed x402 transactions as artificial: "self-dealing" (one wallet as both buyer and seller) and wash trading (the seller funds the buyer, which sends the money straight back). The same snapshot showed about 131,000 daily transactions averaging $0.20. Artemis's February verdict: "the x402 'agent payments' boom is still mostly a mirage." Hold this against the $7 billion aggregate valuation of x402-adjacent tokens, and note the figure is consistent with the Base 30-day numbers above (roughly $40,000 a day to May 29). As teams move from testing to production the artificial share should fall. That decline is the number to watch.

Open questions and gaps

Trust scoring. The single biggest missing piece. Whoever ships this becomes the credit-rating agency for agent commerce.
Stablecoin dependency. Today most traffic settles in USDC on L2. Concentration risk matters. Agora's AUSD going live on Fireblocks' stack is the first meaningful broadening.
Dispute resolution. No chargebacks, no arbitration, no Reg E equivalent.
Liability for bad agent behavior. Hijacked, prompt-injected, or misconfigured agents. Nobody has taken a position.
Merchant adoption. No large merchant has added x402 as a first-class consumer-visible payment option. Shopify and Adyen are founding members but have not shipped one. That is the integration milestone the protocol has not crossed.

Changelog

June 26, 2026

x402.org now publishes an official member roster split into Premier and General tiers, which resolves the earlier caveat that the Foundation listed no public roster. Against that roster we added six general members joined since the founding cohort: Aleo, Kite AI, LayerZero Labs, Quant Network, t54 labs, and utexo (individual join dates and roles are not yet separately documented). Added x402 on Injective as announced: Injective announced the integration and it lets agents settle service fees on Injective, but production usage is not yet visible and no firm date is confirmed. We also reviewed the latest circulating volume figures, which still do not reconcile: clean Base activity is about 3.1 million transactions in the trailing 30 days, while protocol-wide counts that fold in meme-coin farming run as high as roughly 72 million transactions and about $24 million in value over a similar window, with one third-hand figure of about 94,000 buyers and 22,000 sellers. Because the wide series still mixes artificial volume, the existing clean usage datapoints stand.

June 23, 2026

AWS CloudFront and WAF reached general availability for x402 on June 15, 2026: any site already fronted by CloudFront can charge AI agents per request in USDC, settled on Base, as a configuration change rather than a code rewrite. This extends AWS from the buyer side (Bedrock AgentCore Payments, preview May 7) to the publisher side of x402. No member or usage-figure changes this pass: reported new members (Anthropic, NEAR, Ant International) could not be confirmed against the x402 Foundation, which is still in its formation phase and lists no roster, and a reported jump in cumulative counts (e.g. a 169 million payments figure) did not reconcile across primary sources, so the existing usage datapoints stand.

June 12, 2026

Added independent real-volume analysis: CoinDesk (March 11, 2026), drawing on Artemis onchain data, put x402 daily volume near $28,000 with roughly half of transactions artificial (self-dealing and wash trading). Entered alongside the cumulative and 30-day figures so headline counts and verified usage stay visibly separate.

June 10, 2026

Fireblocks added as the first member since the founding cohort (joined May 20). Four integrations added as live: AWS Bedrock AgentCore Payments (preview, May 7), x402 on Arbitrum (May 15), Fireblocks Agentic Payments Suite (May 20), and Casper Network's mainnet facilitator (June 4). Usage data replaced with Chainalysis and Base figures: 100 million cumulative transactions on Base through Q1 2026, 3.1 million in the 30 days to May 29. Spec correction: v2 shipped December 11, 2025, not alongside the Linux Foundation transfer. Batch Settlement (May 11, 2026) added to spec status.

April 28, 2026

Founding member list expanded to 22 members per the April 2, 2026 Linux Foundation announcement. Spec status updated to v2. Bankr x402 Cloud and Cloudflare native support added as live integrations. Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe credited as joint co-developers. Sources added inline.
